How Long Do Corgis Take To Grow? Growth & Weight Chart

People who want an apartment dog usually have to consider the size of their future pet. The main advantage of the Corgi breed is precisely that – their petite size.

Besides, Corgis are not only small house dogs; they are cheerful and affectionate, too. All this earned them a 11th position on the American Kennel Club’s most popular dog breeds list.

If you want to make a Corgi puppy a part of your family and you want to know how big your pet will grow, you came to the right place. We will answer the question: How long do Corgis take to grow, and how big do they get?

If you stay with us to the very end, you will have a chance to study a detailed Corgi growth/weight chart and find out whether your puppy is developing properly. In this way, you can identify any potential problems early on and help your Corgi grow healthy and happy.

Everything You Need To Know About Your Corgi’s Growth

Corgis are currently one of the most popular breeds in the world, thanks to Queen Elizabeth’s love of their breed.  Even though these short-legged dogs used to be sheep and cattle herders, they are now mostly family dogs enjoying all the perks of indoor living.

If you have just adopted one of these dashing dogs, all we can say is – Congratulations! You have made a wise decision.

Every new pet parent has tons of questions, so do not worry if you are that way too. Try not to feel overwhelmed and pay attention only to vital things. For example, when you adopt a young puppy, one of the most critical questions is that of its growth and proper development.

How Big Should Your Corgi Puppy Be?

Of course, no one can tell you the exact size and weight your Corgi should have at a certain age since that depends on many factors. However, a well-devised growth and weight chart can give you a general idea regarding your dog’s physical development.

Let us warn you right away – all the numbers in the chart are only estimates that serve to help you get a general idea of how big or heavy your Corgi should be at a certain age. Puppies grow at different rates. Still, if your puppy is significantly ahead or behind the numbers provided in the chart, it is best to consult your vet and ensure no health issues hinder your dog’s growth.

How Long Do Corgis Stay Puppies?

Corgis are full-grown when they’re about one year old; that is why our growth and weight chart ends at that age too. Some puppies can take longer to fill up their chest, but that is perfectly normal as well and will not influence their weight much.

At the age of two, all Corgis will be done growing for sure. Yet, even though most puppies stop growing at this time, you can (and should) continue working on developing their muscles.

It is imperative to make sure your Corgi is fit because Corgis often have obesity issues. The problem is that excess weight puts additional pressure on the weakest part of their body – their back.

Dogs with long backs and short legs, such as Corgis, are generally at a high risk of Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). A well-managed diet and enough exercise will keep your Corgi lean and strong, and that is the best protection from this severe disease.

Corgis reach their full physical size somewhere around three to four years of age. You can say that they are at their fullest strength at that time, and they should stay like that for at least a couple of years before they start “getting old” and losing their stamina.

Is There A Significant Difference In Height Or Weight Between Male And Female Corgis?

No, even though it is often the case with other breeds, there is no significant or even noticeable difference between Corgis of the opposite gender. Male Corgis do weigh a bit more, but that is often not enough to even notice it.

The American Kennel Club Official Corgi Standards state that an adult male Corgi should weigh up to 30 lbs. while female Corgis should not excell 28 lbs. Most Corgis, no matter their sex, will weigh somewhere between 22 and 30 pounds.

When it comes to height, a full-grown Corgi should be low to the ground and be about 10 to 12 inches tall.  You should measure your Corgi  from the floor to the highest part of their shoulder.

What If Your Corgi Is Overweight?

Let’s imagine that you have adopted a five months old puppy. Your newest family member should weigh at least 14 lbs at that age. If your pooch weighs less, you should switch to a formula of dog food with higher levels of calories and protein and help your Corgi gain weight.

The maximum weight for a five-month-old Corgi puppy is 20 lbs. What if your pet weighs much more than that?

As we have already warned you, Corgis are prone to being overweight. The Veterinary Centers of America agree with this notion and advise that you monitor your Corgi’s weight as they grow.

If you notice that your pooch is overweight, act immediately. Our advice is to consult with your veterinarian rather than try changing your dog’s diet on your own. The vet will recommend an ideal diet for your puppy – the one that will not jeopardize your Corgi’s health and wellbeing.

Of course, exercise will do wonders for your Corgi too. Throughout their history, Corgis have been active herding dogs, and they thus have significant exercise needs even though their lifestyle has changed now.

You must find time to exercise your Corgi every day. Long walks will not do. Your Corgi needs to run, too – preferably off the leash.

How Can You Tell If Your Corgi Is Overweight?

No one puts their dog on a measuring scale every day, and neither should you. Observing your dog and taking notice of all the changes is thus the best method to make sure your puppy stays healthy and happy.

Due to their thick coat, a weight change can sometimes be hard to detect in Corgis. If you cannot visually assess your dog’s weight, you can use your hands too. Feel your Corgi’s body occasionally to determine if he or she has lost or gained weight. Small changes often escape your eye but can become a big problem very quickly.

How Much Bigger Will Your Corgi Get?

Not all Corgis are the same. Estimating how much bigger your Corgi will get is thus not an easy task.

You can always use the Corgi Growth and Weight Chart we have provided for quick reference. It will help you estimate how much weight your puppy is likely to add. Yet, it is not the only method you can use.

Namely, looking at your Corgi’s paws can also help you predict whether your Corgi will be larger or smaller than average. If your dog’s paws seem too big for his or her legs and body, your puppy is most probably still growing. Oversized paws are one of the most prominent signs that your pooch is going to grow bigger!

If you have adopted your Corgi from a breeder, you can contact them and consult them about your dog’s adult size. Breeders can give a reasonable estimate of a puppy’s size since they know both parents and have seen previous litters too.

There is almost no chance that a puppy can outgrow his or her bigger parent. Therefore, a look at your Corgi’s parents could be enough to get an idea of your Corgi’s maximum adult size.

Final Considerations

No matter how quickly or how big your Corgi grows, you can rest assured that he or she will grow into a beautiful dog with a big heart. On the other hand, we understand where your concerns come from. You want only the best for your puppy, and that includes making sure he or she develops appropriately.

We hope that our Corgi Growth and Weight Chart and all the answers provided here have helped you put your mind to ease. We wish you and your puppy a happy, worry-free life together!
